i love reading everything ATHAN.....that being said, here's my thoughts on THIS read.......so many prepare you to the "Friday the 13th" parallel and yea, there are similarities....i have to be honest, i was hooked on this book with similarities (NOW STARTS THE SPOILER ALERTS!!!!)but there's a point where the similarities stopped and that's where i was disappointed....for a long spell, i was captivated, mystified as to the killer or killers identity, mostly because this kind of thing could actually happen at any camp.....but then the bottom fell out for me about 2/3 thru when something else was brought to life and i was like, "seriously?? going THIS route?"....i finished and will buy more, but hope there is no part 2 to this one......Product details

Camp Blaze edition by Jon Athan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Really enjoyed this book, books that keep me turning pages. I had a hard time putting it down.
I'm not a big sequel fan but this might be my exception.
Friday the 13 fans will love this, as it's nearly a reboot in book form.
I have read a number of this authors books and I have not been disappointed at all. This is a slasher style novel that breaks away from some of the moronic stereotypes that you find in horror movies. The sin factor is not the motivation of the killer (No gratuitous sex or drugs involved) very satisfied with this book and I hope he writes a sequel
The book had it's moments but then went all the way out into left field. SPOILERS it was first reading like an obvious tribute to Friday the 13th, expecially with character names similar to the original movie, then at the climax suddenly it went into a Firestarter type scenario and got too strange for me. Very weird and hard to get into. Didn't like the end with the child Kimberly getting killed. Was disappointed overall by the time I was done.
This book definitely followed along like 'Friday the 13th The Novel'. Jon definitely did, however, flip the script so to speak towards the end. A twist on the slasher genre. Also, like the author wrote in his 'Dear Reader letter' at the end, he didn't just kill off "douchebags', he killed of good people as well. This let you know that, "no one is safe!"
This was not your typical kill the counselors at camp novel, THANK GOODNESS!!!! It was not predictable and fooled me SEVERAL times and I am that chick that usually figures out the killer or the motive so I was VERY happy to be wrong, if you are familiar with Jon Athan, you can and better expect BRUTAL, SADISTIC and original killings ( I LUH them) Jon Athan is one sick dude and I am SO happy I came across him! Jon's books are not for the weak at heart if you are into blood, gore, sadistic, twisted kills THIS IS A BOOK YOU WANT TO READ!
My first book by Jon Athan, I bought it because of my love of 80's slasher movies. I wasn't disappointed, the book gives slasher lovers everything they want counsellors being dispatched one by one, a mysterious killer, a final girl and the obligatory 'leaving it open for a sequel' ending. The book moves at a fast pace and can easily be read in a day or two.
Only two minor nitpicks really; sometimes the author introduces a plot device or have a character reappear or behave in a certain way and then over explains it, dude, we get it, we've been paying attention. The second would be the author's feeling the need at the end of the book to explain in an almost apologetic way that his books are super gory and violent, when in reality they aren't. Having gorged myself on the absolutely sick and violently depraved extreme horror of Tim Miller, Wade H Garrett and Matt Shaw, Athan's book is Disney material in comparison, he doesn't even kill any of the kids. This is no bad thing, Friday 13th is a million miles from A Serbian Tale and all the better for it.
But it's an enjoyable book, as soon as I finished it I ordered another of the author's books, Butcher Road, which is a great accomplishment for any author.
